The Reunification Express easing through Hanoi's Train Street beneath strings of red flags
The most common first-timer mistake: trying to see the whole country — Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long, Hue, Hoi An, Saigon, and the Mekong — in twelve days, spent mostly in transit.
Select Your Anchors
Choose two regions and connect them with a single transit day, instead of treating Vietnam as a checklist.
- The Classic Contrast (North & Central): five days between Hanoi and Sapa, then fly south for Huế's history and Hội An's slower pace.
- The Southern Flow (South & Islands): Saigon and the Mekong Delta, finishing with a slow island stretch in Phú Quốc.

"A great route needs breathing space. If Tuesday morning is a hike, Wednesday afternoon is a book and a coconut coffee by the river." — Minh
Balance the Pacing
Follow a 1-to-1 ratio:
- Immersive day — cycling rural villages, a guided street food crawl.
- Recovery day — zero scheduled transfers. Cafés, old streets, the pool.
How Long Each Anchor Needs
| Anchor pairing | Minimum days | Comfortable pace |
|---|---|---|
| The Classic Contrast (North & Central) | 8 | 11–12 |
| The Southern Flow (South & Islands) | 7 | 10 |
Transit times worth planning around: Hanoi–Sa Pa is a 5-hour train or an overnight sleeper; Hanoi–Huế or Đà Nẵng is a 1.5-hour flight; Saigon–Phú Quốc is a 1-hour flight. Anything longer by road eats a full day you could spend somewhere better.
